Exploring the Wonders of Bohol

Exploring the Wonders of Bohol

It was only during my elementary days that I get to see the famous Chocolate Hills in most of my “Hekasi” or “Sibika” books. But it was on May 2008 that I’ve finally set foot on this beautiful island.

Bohol, the tenth largest island of the Philippines, is situated at the Central Visayas region and is beside Cebu and Leyte. It is about 700 kilometers south of Manila and about 70 kilometers southeast of Mactan Island. Bohol has been considered to be one of the dream destinations in the Philippines because of its famous attractions and beautiful white sand beaches.

Amorita Resort Review

Amorita Resort Review

It was in May 2008 when I had the chance to visit Bohol for a 4 days / 3 nights stay. Our trip to Bohol was totally unexpected so we didn’t have much time to plan the whole trip. A week before our trip, I already started looking for an accommodation in Panglao Island and I was quite surprised of their rates – most of which are really quite expensive.

While I was searching the Internet for a nice place to stay in Panglao Island, I stumbled upon this stylish and very elegant resort – Amorita Resort. Amorita, which means “little love” in Spanish is owned by the 28-year old Ria Hernandez-Cauton. The resort is nestled atop a beach sided cliff which offers spectacular and breathtaking views of the sky and Panglao Island’s Alona White Beach. It is quite new since it was built just 2 years ago, I think.

People’s Park in Davao City

People’s Park in Davao City

Months before our trip to the largest city on the island of Mindanao, I had already been searching the Internet for a list of must-see places and attractions in Davao. I stumbled upon Flickr and saw a great number of awesome Davao photos but my attention was caught by those gigantic sculptures of durian and the Philippine eagle.

We decided to look for these gigantic sculptures during our last day in Davao, since our flight bound to Manila was scheduled in the afternoon. One of our colleagues, Mimi, who was from Davao served as our tour guide/photographer for that day and took us to the People’s Park.

White Water Rafting in Davao

White Water Rafting in Davao

One of the most thrilling activities available in Davao City, aside from the zip line adventure, is the white water rafting (also called WWR.) According to Wikipedia, “white water rafting is a challenging recreational activity using an inflatable raft to navigate a river or other bodies of water.”

I was able to experience Cagayan de Oro’s white water rafting adventure last June 2008 so I suggested to my colleagues that we should also include this as part of our planned activities in Davao. And prior to our arrival in Davao City last February 2009, we have already made a reservation with Davao Wildwater Adventure, Inc.

Diving at Marissa Reef in Samal Island, Davao

Diving at Marissa Reef in Samal Island, Davao

Davao is well blessed with over 23 dive sites in Samal Island alone and is truly a haven for scuba divers and underwater photographers. So as part of our planned activities in Davao last February 2008, my friends and I decided to go diving in one of the many available dive sites in Samal Island, the Marissa Reef.

Marissa Reef is approximately a 30 to 45-minute boat ride from Sta. Ana Wharf Davao and is situated at the southeast side of Samal Island near the Pearl Farm Beach Resort. It was named after the person who started the underwater photography in the island, Marissa Florendo, who also happened to be the daughter of the discoverer.
