Batanes Resort Review

As we arrived at Basco Airport, we saw the driver, Kuya Nards, and the receptionist of Batanes Resort, Ate Rose, waiting for us at the arrival lounge holding a placard with Icey’s name on it. As we approached them, they welcomed us and have been very friendly and accommodating to us. They even assisted us on the booths where we should sign and pay for our tourist fees. Batanes Resort is just a few minutes drive from Basco Airport and is a government-owned resort nestled atop a hill which offers a great panoramic view of the South China Sea.

Last 2008, the resort comprises six (6) duplex bungalows inspired by the traditional Ivatan stone houses but they have recently renovated and it now has 10 stone houses. Each room is spacious enough to accommodate three (3) persons. The cottages are concrete and are made of stones with wide windows and red-colored roofs. The six original cottages are named after the six municipalities of Batanes namely: Ivana, Uyugan, Mahatao, Basco, Sabtang and Itbayat. Of all the cottages, we recommend the rooms on ‘Itbayat’ because they offer an unobstructed view of the South China Sea.

We can say that this resort is one of the best choices in the area because of its reasonable rates. It just costs us P1,000.00 per room/per night for 3 pax already. I am just not sure if they have increased their rates now.

Their rooms are nice (nothing fancy), clean and very cozy. All Batanes Resort rooms have the following:

  • Two Beds (Queen-sized and Single beds)
  • Airconditioning
  • Private Toilet and Bath
  • Hot and Cold Shower
  • Cable TV
  • Ceiling Fan
  • Lamps
  • Drawer with Bible + Candles inside
  • Huge Cabinets + Hangers
  • Intercom
  • Basic Toilettries (toothpaste in sachet, small soap, shampoo in sachet)

*A standby generator is readily available in case of brown outs. But in our case, they only used the generator in the morning.

The staffs of Batanes Resort are very friendly and accommodating. The service they gave us was superb and was way beyond any expectations that we had. They always make it a point to greet their guests with a smile and simple words such as “Good Morning,” “Good Afternoon,” “Good Evening,” every time they get to see us.

The resort is surrounded by green pastures with different varieties of flowers. The reception area is very clean and simple with its nicely designed ceilings and red-tiled floorings. It has comfortable leather sofa for their guests and has some Batanes handicrafts which depict the talents of the Ivatans.

Just behind the reception area is the resort’s kitchen and restaurant that serves a hearty meal and native delicacies. The restaurant has two crystal chandeliers hanging on its high ceilings. It has monobloc plastic chairs and tables which are covered with white table cloths during mealtimes. Just outside the restaurant is another covered area with aluminium tables and chairs and terrace overlooking the South China Sea. The guest may opt to eat and stay here if they want. Each viand is already good for 2 to 3 pax and may costs P50.00 for veggies and P100.00 to P200.oo for other meat viands. In case you have your own food preferences, feel free to inform them and they will be very eager to accommodate them for you.

Another tip, there is actually a hill located at the back of the cottages in Batanes Resort, you might want to try climbing up that hill for you to have a nice view of the island.

    hi wayne,

did you have to pay a 50% deposit to secure a room at batanes resort? if you did, how (i.e. via bank transfer, cash, credit card, etc.)? nag-book kasi ako ng room in the same resort and i was asked to pay a deposit via bank transfer to a personal bank account. wala pa daw account ang batanes resort itself which i find a bit strange considering they’ve been operating for years now. just wanted to check how you guys made the booking and how you settled payments.

hope to hear from you! thanks! 😀

    Hi Edlou,

No, we didn’t. At that time, tinanong din namin kung papano yung reservation sa kanila. Kung kailangan pa ba namin magdeposit or not. Pero sabe nila, hindi na daw. Pagdating na lang daw namin doon. Actually kahit nung dumating kami, wala rin kaming binayaran pa. Lahat ng bayaran nangyari lang nung nagcheck out na kami. 😀 I’m just not sure how they do it now. 🙁

Thanks pls help plan namin January. Thanks.

    Hi Edlou,

Siguro nga ganun. Just be careful. 🙂 Thanks in advance! Goodluck to your trip. Enjoy! 🙂

    Hi Jen,

Parang fair enough naman na ata yung 25K per pax na kasama na lahat. To think na mahal ang airfare. Nung pumunta kasi kami dun, hindi kami kumuha ng packages. Separate yung fare namin, then kinontak namin mismo yung Batanes Resort for our reservations. Then nagkataon lang na meron na ring available tour guide sa resort so dun na lang din kami kumuha. Yung trip din namin sa Batanes was last 2008 pa so baka nagincrease na rin ang mga rates doon ngayon. 🙂

    Hi Jen,

Hmm, siguro. Kasi kung 5D/4N lang kayo then 12K, ok na siguro yun. Ilan ba kayong pupunta? Kami kasi nun, almost 50-60K ang nagastos namin nun for our 6D/5N stay for 3pax. So parang tig-15-20K per head kami. Kaya tingin ko, pwede na siguro yung 12K na package sa inyo. 😀

Parang ganun na nga. Mahal na kasi yung fare ngayon papunta doon. Kaya medyo mahal na talaga yung budget na kailangan. Hmm, try nyo rin magresearch ng mga updated rates ngayon sa Batanes then try to compare kung saan kayo mas makakamura. 🙂

I plan to go with my brother from April 22-24, 2010. If anyone is interested to join the sightseeing tours so we can save, pls call Romy Merida , one of the best tour guides in Batanes. He will hire an adventure-0916-902-6712. First 2 days of sightseeing is 2k per day while the 3rd day( Sabtang Island) is 1.500/day. Tour guide gets paid 1k/day. So if we can get from 2-6 pax, costs will dramatically drop.

    Hi all,
I am sure all the goodies published here are true. Unfortutanely I am very sad to say that those days were long gone. This resort (If one can call it a resort) is nothing but a PIT STOP. management of this place is second to hell. I’m sorry to say all these but…. The location is perfect but that’s about what is good in this place. I strongly recommend to stay at private places. This is a gov’t run hostel. Yes a hostel not a hotel.
Sorry Wayne and all. I have to say it to help future visitors avoid the traps from this hostel. I am not saying not to stay at this trap but I am warning you to stay away from this place.

    Hi Hal and all,

We just got back from that island and I agree 110% with Hal. Things changed I guess since Wayne and co. went there. No offense but I’d rather stay in a cheap private house/hotel but not in this Batanes Resort. Service was lousy, food is yucky and the environment is dirty. Since the day we checked- in there was this used qtip on the walkway infront of our door. It stayed there until we left because nobody even sweep the walkways. Cigarette butts all over the place and the way down to the beach was full of garbage, plastic spoons food wrappers, used tissue papers etc, etc……. Amazing.
I guess if you are in a tour group, should be okay because you will be gone all day everyday.
Not worth your money staying in this place!!!!!!!! They just want your money without providing good service. Towns people told us that there were so many complaints about this hotel but noone is making any action. Juts like what Hal said… Tourist Trap !!!!!

Yes it is really sad Wayne. Then again maybe we were just unlucky during our stay . I thought of formally filing a complaint to the management. I was sadly told that the manager of this resort is a mechanic or electrician. No formal hotel management training. I almost fainted.

I am waiting for answer from someone in the island. I need to know if this is run by local or provincial gov’t. I will send my complain either to the mayor of Basco or the governor.

    Our view…..

We just got back. Two prs of retirees. Me and my husband retired back in Bulacan, The other couple stayed in Florida USA. We always revisit places we’ve been in 3 years cycle. We travel every year, the four of us.
Anyway this year was Philippines in our 3 year cycle and Batanes,Boracay,Guimarias,Sorsogon,Cebu,Tagaytay,Manila,Baguio,Mt Province were the usual. We did Batanes last. To our surprise Batanes doesn’t seem to advance as far as tourism is concerned. The plane fare is also enormously expensive. Bottom line, Batanes is no longer in our list. The island seems to be a dead end. Not showing anything that will please the tourists. The Gov’t do not care at all. For the local tourists who wants a better deal for their hard earned PHP, go Boracay or Guimarias. It is cheaper and beaches are well worth. Hotels provide 5 stars service.

Mountain ranges in Batanes and coastline will stay and will be there forever. It’s better to wait until the authorities in Batanes learn how to respect tourists and their monies. For diving enthusiasts, dive with the Whale sharks in Sorsogon. We did and it’s worth your money. In Batanes you can’t even swim. Monster and killer waves everytime and everywhere. Palawan is another place to go.
This is our own observation and we are not trying to influence your decision where to spend your hard earned PHP or $$. Just giving you our point of view that Batanes is no longer a viable place to visit.
Batanes is advancing backwards. The gov’t take tourist monies and never look back. There are no services for tourists at all. Zippo! People in the island are nice . Actually there is no nightlife in that island. This was the 3rd time we visited Batanes. It may be awhile before we even think of going back . Before closing, there is this place I forgot to mention in Cebu called Malapascua island. Heck of a place. It’s an adventure to get there but it’s well worth it… fun.

hi! my friends and i just visited batanes (feb 6-9, 2011). we stayed in batanes resort which i highly recommend. i guess it has undergone a make-over from the visits of those who didn’t enjoy their stay in this resort. the place is well kept and the staff members are very friendly and accommodating. food is good. we arranged for all of our meals to be served, which all of us enjoyed. for a place that only charges P1,800 per room per night with a marvelous view of the south china sea, this place is a good bargain. i can not ask for more since it even offers a hot shower, airconditioning and the basic needs for bath. i’d say having HBO as one of the channels is a surprise bonus since i don’t expect this raw nature paradise to have it.

my highest commendation to kuya nards garcia who took care of everything we needed, from booking the resort to all of our meals (including a light house dinner), trips, permits, etc. he’s such a friendly, humble and trustworthy soul who only banks on trust whenever he accommodates tourists. never did i have any feelings of distrust since all of our transactions were only thru bank to bank money transfer, email, phone calls and text messages. we only came face to face with him when he picked us from the airport. of course, he has his group of as highly recommended circle of tourist guides like kuya anong and kuya rene.

to anyone who’s reading this, you are rest-assured you can arrange for everything from manila with kuya nards just by the ways of communication i’ve mentioned. you’d be in good hands in his group’s company.

so, what are you waiting for? LAKBAY NA SA BATANES!

hi ferry. kuya nards’ cel number is posted near his close-up picture above. if you don’t connect with him, it’s because he is in a place in the island where the signal suddenly weakens or gets lost. just redial again later. i don’t have the cel numbers of kuya anong and kuya rene. it’s really kuya nards who arranges everything.

as for the amount, it really depends on how many you are in your group as the total expense will be divided by your head count, where you’d stay, inclusions in the package deal (like all meals pre-arranged) with kuya nards. we were able to avail of the 50% promo of seair.

contact kuya nards and tell him how many members you have in your group, the place where you wish to stay, what you want him to include, etc. it’s best he gives you the amount per head. it really boils down to the number of tourists. the more you are, the merrier, the cheaper it will become. better call him now as batanes is such a tourist destination from january until july. tourism peak starts in march and continues until may or june. you may find it difficult to book batanes resort now since it is the second choice to fundacion pacita. anyway, kuya nards has other options to offer you and your friends.

i’m definite you’d enjoy your vacation in batanes. take care and God bless 🙂

hi jennix. why won’t you coordinate with kuya nards instead? i did the same thing last year when i was planning for our trip. all the numbers i found in every google hit relating to batanes resort were dead. i ended with kuya nards who arranged everything! it’s true you have to make a deposit to reserve the room to you and your company. otherwise, it will be given to the next tourist who makes a downpayment.
we sent money via landbank bank to bank transfer thru kuya nards’ landbank account in basco. it’s named after his wife, leticia (don’t think kuya nards is a hoax just because he gave you a female account).
contact kuya nards now and make that arrangement with batanes resort as it sells like hotcake this time of the year. get him as your tourist guide as well. you’d be well taken cared of definitely.

While I’ve read the mixed reviews regarding the service of the resort, we, with our brave yet hopeful dispositions, decided to go ahead. when we visited batanes feb last year, we were able to purchase seair tickets at 50% discount so that’s only P7,150.00. if you will read what i wrote earlier, the cost becomes cheaper as the number of tourists in your group increases. if it’s just you, your husband and child will visit batanes, you may end up spending that amount for the three of you considering you avail of seair’s travel promo. it usually starts to sale come november. so i advise you to check its website every day come last week of october. batanes, as everyone describes it, is paradise on earth. it’s beauty is one of a kind that spending that amount of money is worth it. palawan is a different story. you may go to puerto princesa, coron, el nido or amanpulo. each destination costs differently. it’s true you can spend 10k only for puerto princesa that includes airfare, hotel and food for you and your husband but you have to catch the super sale promo of airlines and be content with two-star or at most three-star accommodation.

maricar, my friend’s trip to palawan with regards to airfare is not promo. i know batanes is a paradise but palawan has the Underground river.. its about to be declared as seven wonders of the world, kung makakalusot…
10k ang budget going to palawan per head… including everything…
for batanes, the 7,150 is only for airfare? roundtrip?
grabe… kya ang daming mga pilipino ang hindi ngde dare mg tour s pinas because its too expensive… buti p trip to Hong Kong mas mura..

I just happened to come across this dialog site as I scout for reviews of other hotels in batanes. It is so interesting to read the lower entries in this page and to encounter one different opinion. We have considered staying in fundacion pacita for our trip to batanes. It’s a matter of choosing the place that will suit your need and lifestyle, and of course, having the “budget” to afford that. Even if you wish you could stay in fundacion pacita or let’s say, aman pulo in palawan, you can not do that if you cannot afford it. These two are nature’s beauty but getting there to experience and enjoy God’s gift is by NO MEANS FREE. Folks living in those places will definitely give you their utmost hospitality for you to cherish and remember their place. However, inasmuch as these places promote their tourism, doing so comes with a lot of work and expenses. Hence, one cannot avoid bartering. We pay in return for the vacation we want. We pay for the travel guide’s time and effort. He’s giving you his hours instead of spending it with his family or tending to another client, who has accepted to pay his fee and does not even think this is a form of abuse. We pay for the airline tickets because seair purchased the oil to run its plane and to pay the salaries of the pilot and flight attendant who make sure that your flight is safe and comfortable. You see, there are a lot of people and things into consideration just to make that single trip. So don’t judge these people as banking on God’s free gifts to abuse tourists like you and I. And as advised to you previously, go to a place that suits your budget. Even you, monthly receive compensation for the talent you impart to your corporation or institution; a talent God gifted you but you improved on by your parents’ educational expenses for you.

    Hi!

I just want to ask if this accommodation has a function room or a common area where I could hold a quiet meeting with maybe 10 persons?

    Thanks!

    Abby
